My current Home PC (PIII/192MB) is installed with Debian sid. I have this setup for last one month and found stable. Actually I installed Debian Sarge through DVD. It was just base install. After first phase of installation, the installation wizard prompted for which tree of debian I wish to install. It offered Stable (Sarge), Testing (Etch) and Unstable (Sid).

Fedora Core 5 on HP nx6120 laptop

I have installed Fedora Core 5 on my HP nx6120 Laptop. It looks faster and stable than previous releases.
My observations:
1. Faster booting - it takes 60 seconds to get login screen.
2. Faster GNOME - takes 4 seconds to get desktop from gdm.

Recently I updated my HP-Compaq nx6120 laptop with Ubuntu Dapper Drake alpha 6.06 release. Then I have updated to Beta-2 release. Here is the screenshot of this cute desktop. The first impression is Fantastic Performance and eye candy.

Apart from Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux, my laptop has one more feather in its cap. It is FreeBSD 6.0 My passion on this OS stands for long time since I read about its background through Linus's autobiography.

If you have to gain all these other "soft skills" or business skills in order to just be a regular software engineer, then why keep working for someone else? One of the main reasons for being an employee is because it's (supposed to be) both easier and safer than striking out on your own. Instead of long hours and having to wear many hats, you can just concentrate on your own skill, and leave the business stuff to the people who specialize in that. Anyone familiar with the idea of specialized labor should understand this. The downside is (supposed to be) your pay is lower than it could potentially be by owning and operating your own business.

If today's corporations want their regular rank-and-file employees to wear many hats, be multi-talented, and have a lot of business skills, then they're simply not doing their own jobs correctly.
