Meanwhile version 2007.3 Pardus "Lynx lnyx" is available. This distribution indeed is as good as openSUSE or as good as Kubuntu, it can be recommended for beginners as well as for Linux-experts.

Recently, Pardus development team decided to exclude any secondary desktop environment from the distro, until the integration of this alternative DE becomes as mature as KDE. Further reading (Turkish)

I'm running Pardus on my 8-yr-old Gateway desktop. The distro, like so many others, has all the applications I need for daily home use. My young children like visiting pbskids.org, which relies heavily on Flashplayer; so its inclusion on the installation CD was a pleasant surprise.

Sometimes the screen will black out and the keyboard dies when I switch users. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi,

I've just installed Pardus on my notebook. In last 30 days, i used ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, zenwalk, opensuse as linux and pc-bsd, desktopbsd as bsd.

Although Pardus uses KDE, it was amazing to see its reboot time is almost equal to xubuntu which is very lightweight ditribution. It recognized almost all hardware, just graphic card sticked to 1280 resolution instead of 1400.

[...] Here’s a nice review of Pardus Linux, a distribution I had not heard of before. It is funded and developed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey and brings some unique features to the table. It uses KDE as its desktop manger and has a very nice and clean looking interface. It looks like a distribution to keep an eye on for future releases. I’m going to have to take a look at Pardus myself soon. Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]

I think that using distros without changing their default desktop environment is a must. (Using a distro with its default language and with its default DE help you getting better online support, as almost all documentations -whether they are official or not- would be prepared for the default selections of the distro.)

IMHO, Ubuntu is the best if you prefer GNOME, but Kubuntu can't compete Pardus in any way. Pardus really is a great distro for KDE fans and has a bright future ahead.

My only little complaint could be, that there aren't any Turkish distros shipping GNOME as default. Pardus is not exceptional, it is a very KDE-oriented project too. I think that Turkish developers prefer KDE, in order to make people switch more easily to Linux, as KDE is much more looking/feeling like Windows. (Here in Turkey, Windows is installed almost on every computer. Although it is quite expensive software, pirated copies of Windows can be sold/bought easily, like in any other developing country. This may be a reason for Pardus being much more popular abroad.)

There has been some discussion about starting a project like Gardus (a semi-official version that'll be shipped with GNOME as default), but don't know anything about its status now. Nevermind, I'll stick with the default selection of any distro. (Please read my thoughts above. However it's needless to say: Arch, Debian and Slackware are exceptional distros for my decision:))

Thank you for writing this nice review.
