Come on, GNOME based Pardus Linux!

Some times back I had written a small review on Pardus Linux 2007. I had mentioned that I did not use it for long time, but it is worth to watch this innovative and good performing distro. My production system is Ubuntu based. Before upgrading/installing Ubuntu 7.04, I was trying to use Pardus Linux 2007 as my production system as trial basis. It was a good success. The performance, usability, stability are near comparable with Ubuntu. But it needs more integration of application, polish and ...

Review: Arch Linux 0.7.2

Why Arch Linux? When the life goes smooth, we get bored. When everything goes smooth we need some challenge to face and conquer. This is applicable for Linux distribution world also. After started admiring with Ubuntu, I did not want to be locked with it. I test a distribution only if it is having some unique feature in it. Zenwalk is one such promising. Here is my review on it. I came to know about Arch, which is optimized for i686 processors, so it is meant for recent generation of processors...

Review: Zenwalk 3.0

The time I spend on distro watching (various linux distributions) has come down a lot after working on Ubuntu for last one year. But I use to revise my soft corner with Ubuntu by testing some other distro also. I am not a linux server guy. I am a programmer who needs good stable home pc with programming environments, a lot of packages, multimedia features, personal management suites and internet applications with reasonably latest release also. Ubuntu fulfills this to good extent. Now I have leg...

Installing Linux From Scratch – Part II

Day 3: 1st Aug 2006, evening (Tue): Powered on PC and chroot-ed into LFS filesystem again. glibc compilation, time zone settings, etc. are being done. This time i am more comfortable. But tar command is not working in chroot-ed environment. I think I have done some mistake. But no problem, I extracted the bzipped tar files from host (Slackware 10.1) environment and compiled from chroot-ed environment. :-) :-) happy to manage this kind of issues. Day 4: 05th Aug 2006 (Sat): The whole day I spe...

Installing Linux From Scratch – Part I

My LFS History: you are entitled to skip :-) This is my long time wish to install a Linux system from scratch. One year before I had downloaded Linux From Scratch (LFS) - Live CD 6.1. I prepared a hard-copy of installation manual. With a lot of enthusiasm I sat in front of my computer. I booted the system with this live-cd and start installing by reading the manual. After 2 hours, I found that LFS installation is not like most other distros, to start installation and finish in a few minutes or ...

Cool Firefox 1.5

Mozilla has released Firefox 1.5 web browser yesterday (29th Nov 2005). It has many good features and improvements. I list out the features which I understood and like here. 1.Back and Forward works fast. Everytime when you go forth and back, the already rendered page is transferred to screen instead of rendering again. Nice thought! 2.Automatic Update has been very well integrated. Here afterwards need not to download the entire (5MB) Firefox for security update. A few hundred KB of file is eno...

Amazing OpenOffice 2.0!

One of my office colleague was working on a MS-Word (.doc) file with MS-Office 2003. Suddenly one bad day it was corrupted. He could not open the file with MS-Office 2003 suite. The recovery option did not even showed that there is a file to recover. Just like that I came to know this. I gave a try with OpenOffice 2.0 writer. It opened the file without any hassles. MS-Word (.doc) format is proprietory of Microsoft, which is closed one. A open source office suite (OpenOffice) which does not have ...

coLinux cooperating with Windows XP on HP nx6120

What is this? I tried coLinux 0.6.2 on Win-XP-SP2 running on HP nx6120 laptop. :-) It works fine. Just amazing....! I felt like working on full fledged installed linux. http://wiki.colinux.org is very much useful. It **does not** take much memory, just 2 MB only :-) What is coLinux? CoLinux is a linux running on other Operating System, so that switching between two operating systems is just finger tip work. Installation method I followed 1. Downloaded coLinux-0.6.2.exe (4.7MB) and Debia...
